Edward Richard Novinski was born on April 28, 1987 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was a generous, kind hearted, adventurous man who believed in living life to its fullest, making every day count. He had a strong work ethic and embraced the challenges presented to him both in his personal life and professional life as a Research Analyst at an investment firm. Edward was enthusiastic and enjoyed the outdoors. He loved scuba diving, fishing, skiing and hunting. However, sailing was his greatest passion. He was happiest being out on the water knowing he could go wherever he wanted with just the help of the wind. Edward deeply loved his family and when they were able to take sailing trips together, it provided him great joy.
He married his best friend, Caitlin, and they began to grow their family. In October 2021, Edward was diagnosed with localized osteosarcoma in his right distal femur. For the next three years, Edward endured nearly thirty rounds of chemotherapy (the vast majority inpatient for 5-7 days inclusive of MAP), two major limb salvage surgeries, three lung surgeries, an above-the-knee amputation and ten radiation treatments. He was treated primarily at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, along with Dana Farber, Cleveland Clinic and Sloan Kettering. As the disease progressed, he bravely spent five weeks in Houston at MD Anderson in a Phase 1-2 clinical trial with a determined desire for a cure and selflessly hoping to further advance research which would help those coming after him.
Unfortunately, the trial proved unsuccessful and Edward came home to be with his family for his five remaining weeks under home hospice care. He never wavered from his commitment to do whatever it took to spend as much time as he could with the family he loved so dearly. Edward was an absolute warrior throughout his battle remaining positive, hopeful and focused on finding the best treatment for a disease that continues to elude a meaningful and lasting clinical solution and outcome.
Edward was passionate about helping find a cure for this cruel disease. It is a very rare cancer and even more unusual for him to receive his diagnosis at age 34. He could never imagine children having to endure the same difficult treatments he received as an adult. Once his leg was amputated in March 2024, he also developed a strong awareness towards children being able to receive prosthetics without the worry of finances. In addition, Edward was eager to support families to help them during their loved one’s hospital stays, as it was important for him to always have someone from his family with him as he traveled from Naples, FL to the various Cancer Centers. It would give Edward great satisfaction to know that people are continuing to fight for osteosarcoma patients to reduce the suffering associated with this challenging disease.
Thank you to his oncologists, Drs: Reed, Metz, Anderson, Livingston, Hong and their care teams.
Edward peacefully passed into his eternal home on September 24, 2024 and is forever an OsteoAngel. Edward is survived by his beloved wife, Caitlin, and their children, Keegan, Eleanor and Madeline as well as their dog Kirby, and many friends and family.
